These sailing course levels are described below as taken from the
ASA Official International Log Book that each student receives at
the initiation of their ASA instructional sequence on boarding
Fidelity. Persons wishing to take one or more of these courses
should arrive on board Fidelity prepared to take the
written examinations so that charter time spent can be directed towards
sailing skills. Recommended charter duration is 6-7 days for one level,
7-9 days for two and 8-10 days on board for all levels, durations
depending on experience. |
| ASA Level 101 - Basic Keelboat Sailing |
General Description: The successful candidate will
demonstrate his or her ability to sail a boat of about 20 feet in length
[or larger] in light to moderate winds and sea conditions in familiar
waters without supervision. A preparatory Standard with no auxiliary
power or navigation skills required. Material in the Basic Keelboat
Course has been approved by the National Association of State Boating
Law Administration and the U.S. Coast Guard. This course may be used to
satisfy licensing and mandatory education requirements in some states.

| ASA Level 103 - Basic Coastal Cruising |
Prerequisites: ASA Level 101 - Basic Keelboat Sailing
Certification General Description: The successful candidate
will demonstrate his or her ability to cruise safely in local and
regional waters as both skipper and crew on an auxiliary sailboat of
about 20 to 30 feet in length [or larger], in moderate winds and sea
conditions. |
| ASA Level 104 - Bareboat Chartering |
Prerequisites: ASA Level 103 - Basic Keelboat Sailing
Certification General Description: The successful candidate for
this level of certification with demonstrate his or her ability to
undertake a Standard of advanced cruising including cruising
experience. The individual can act as skipper or crew of a 30
- 50 foot boat [or larger] sailing by day in coastal waters. The
Standard includes knowledge of boat systems and maintenance procedures. |
| ASA Level 105 - Coastal Navigation |
Prerequisites: None General Description: The
successful candidate for this level of certification with demonstrate
his or her ability to accomplish the navigational theory
required to safely navigate a sailing vessel in coastal or inland
waters. Tehre is no Sailing Skills part to this Standard and practical
application of thes Sailing Knowledge is found in the Advanced Coastal
Cruising Standard (ASA Level 106). |
